Quinta Lua Azul has been a labour of love for our Mum. We hope you will love it too…. Having lived in and visited countless countries, mum and Clive chose to retire to central Portugal. They bought a ruin in the beautiful Portuguese heartland, and have spent two years renovating the ruin into the lovely farmhouse it is today.

They have now opened up a wing for guests to stay and experience the ‘real’ Portugal. If you want England-on-Sea, with lobster pink tourists eating chicken in a basket, then this is not the place for you….. However, if you want the authentic Portuguese experience and enjoy comfortable, rustic surroundings; gorgeous countryside; swimming in clean rivers and lakes; mountain biking; freshwater fishing, or simply relaxing on a peaceful sun drenched veranda to recharge your batteries, then Quinta Lua Azul is the perfect place for you and your family – or just you!

Local restaurants serving fresh fish and delicious Portuguese and international dishes are a 15 minute drive away. The fascinating university city of Coimbra is an hour away and Pombal and Tomar are also well worth a visit. Anyone interested in theological history and architecture will enjoy walking to the many local churches and generally exploring the historic sights and ruins of this famous Knights Templar stronghold. If you love walking through lush green countryside, olive and lemon groves, and have a curiosity to see what is round the next corner, then you will love the surroundings and spend hours exploring..

The farmhouse has a small family of gentle and fully house-trained pets – currently three cats and two dogs. All are child-friendly and great fun, yet will keep out of your way if that’s your preference. Despite the emphasis on exploring or R&R (rest and relaxation), the farmhouse, courtyard and veranda are fully wi-fi’d and would be a wonderful haven for writers or anyone who wants to work in peaceful surroundings in weather that is reliably much better than in Northern Europe! A comprehensive video/DVD library and a large collection of books are also available for relaxing evenings in.

The local shop/café/bar is a ten minute walk away and a larger collection of shops and restaurants; choices of indoor or outdoor swimming pools are within a very short driving range. Quinta Lua Azul is easy to find. It is a couple of kilometres from the nearest market town – Pedrogao Grande - and a 2 hour drive from Lisbon (almost entirely on motorways and major roads) or a 90 minute train journey from Lisbon to Pombal followed by a 40 minute car or taxi journey. It takes only slightly longer from Porto – again via main roads or the train. My sister and I are bereft that Mum’s decision to open up a wing to guests means we can’t just pitch up whenever we please – but it does mean you can enjoy this little piece of Portuguese paradise and spend time in the heart of a truly fascinating country.
